Il ritratto dell’artista. Nello specchio di Narciso. Il volto, la maschera, il selfie
San Domenico Museum, Forlì
February 21 – June 29 2025
Tornabuoni Art is pleased to announce the loan of Michelangelo Pistoletto’s L’uomo nero (1959) to the Museo Civico San Domenico in Forlì, on the occasion of the exhibition Il ritratto dell’artista. Nello specchio di Narciso. Il volto, la maschera, il selfie, directed by Gianfranco Brunelli and curated by Cristina Acidini, Fernando Mazzocca, Francesco Parisi, and Paola Refice.
Through a selection intertwining painting, photography, installation, and performance, the exhibition explores the ways in which artists have represented themselves across the centuries, bringing into dialogue self-portraits ranging from the ancient world to the digital age.
Dating from the artist’s early period, Pistoletto’s L’uomo nero strongly engages with this reflection, evoking identity as both construction and mask, situated between physical presence and existential inquiry. The work enters into dialogue with pieces by artists such as Mario Ceroli, Bill Viola, and Marina Abramović, highlighting the multiplicity of languages through which the artist has narrated himself over time.
The exhibition is on view until 29 June 2025.
